In a stunning seizure, heroin worth Rs 19,000 crore has been seized from Mundra Port in Gujarat’s Kutch. The contraband was reportedly imported from Afghanistan.

In what is said to be one of the largest ever seizures in the world, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has impounded two containers carrying nearly 3,000 kgs of heroin. Two persons have been arrested and the role of some Afghan nationals is also being investigated.

Reports said that searches are being conducted in Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Gandhidham and Mandvi in Gujarat.

Afghanistan is the world's biggest producer of heroin, supplying between 80-90 per cent of global output.

In July, the Directorate had seized about 300 kg of heroin from some containers at Nhava Sheva Port in Navi Mumbai. It was being smuggled in the garb of talcum powder.

At the same port, the agency had seized 191 kg of heroin in August 2020.
