With a rise in cases of mucormycosis or black fungus in Gujarat, doctors in Vadodara have now reported another fungal infection called Aspergillosis, in patients who have recently recovered from Covid-19. On Thursday, Vadodara had 262 cases of black fungus and eight cases of Aspergillosis.

Doctors say pulmonary Aspergillosis is primarily being seen in immuno-compromised patients, but while it is not as deadly as black fungus, the infection can be fatal if not treated in time. Experts have attributed the rising cases of fungal infections among Covid-19 patients to the excessive use of steroids.

According to the US CDC, Aspergillosis is an infection caused by Aspergillus, a common mold that lives indoors and outdoors. Most people breathe in Aspergillus spores every day without getting sick. However, people with weakened immune systems or lung diseases are at a higher risk of developing health problems due to the mold. Symptoms include allergic reactions, lung infections, and infections in other organs.
