Xi Jinping on Saturday said that peaceful intergration of Taiwan with the mainland is in the best interest of the people amid a ratcheting-up of China's threats to attack the island.

Xi Jinping said that Taiwan was born out of the weakness and chaos of the Chinese nation and that the biggest obstacle to its reunification was the "Taiwan independence" force.

The statement comes after China's air force mounted four straight days of incursions into Taiwan's air defence identification zone from October 1. This involved nearly 150 aircraft.
