West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay retired, effective from Monday afternoon and has been appointed as the chief adviser to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for three years.

After Bandyopadhyay's retirement, HK Dwivedi has taken over as Chief Secretary, Mamata announced

The development comes amid a tussle between Centre and the state after Bengal CM skipped a review meeting on Cyclone Yaas with PM Modi. Following the row that ensued, the Centre asked Bengal government to transfer Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay to New Delhi.

Mamata Banerjee clearly said she would not follow the Centre's order of shifting Bandyopadhyay in the middle of her state's Covid fight. She even wrote a letter to PM Modi on Monday morning stating her decision.
