A-fib causes symptoms including lack of energy, dizziness, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and chest pain and if left untreated can lead to serious complications. People suffering from A-fib are advised to avoid alcohol as it’s known to worsen symptoms.
For the study, researchers examined more than 79,000 men and women between the ages of 45 and 83. After a period of 12 years, the team closely looked at the effects different types of alcohol had on these people.
Researchers found an increased risk for A-fib in people who drank one to three glasses of wine and liquor per day. They did not find such a relationship with drinking beer. As per the findings, a person's risk for developing A-fib increased 8 percent with each additional alcoholic drink per day.
