Google announced Android 12L, an upcoming update for the latest Android 12 that will bring new features aimed at tablets and foldable devices. The update will also bring refinements and changes to UI elements like the lock screen, quick settings, notifications, home screen, and more.
On devices with a display screen size above 600dp, system elements like the lock screen and notification pull-down will use a new two-column layout, to spread out UI elements and take full advantage of the screen’s real estate.
The Android 12L update will be aimed at Android tablets, foldable devices, and ChromeOS devices. Google has announced that the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro will be the first device to get the Android 12L developer preview.

Another new feature for Android 12L will be a taskbar that allows users to instantly switch apps. It will also make using split screen mode easier. In Android 12L, Google will force all apps to run in split screen mode, whether the app declares itself as resizable or not.
Google has asked developers to build apps while keeping multiple screen sizes in mind. Android 12L will also include a new API that helps apps detect folding hinges. Apps which don’t have support for large screens will also carry a warning on the Play Store.
