England skipper Joe Root has become the first batter since 2008 to score 1600 Test runs in a calendar year.
Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith scored 1656 runs in 2008 and since then no batter had crossed the 1600-run mark. Former Australian captain Michael Clarke came close to the mark but missed it by 5 runs in 2012. Meanwhile, Root also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's and Sunil Gavaskar's records of 1562 and 1549 runs respectively while coursing towards the milestone.
England have to play one more Test this year and it won't be wrong to say that Root has the opportunity to cross Smith's record 1656 runs. Notably, Mohammad Yousuf dons the record of most Test runs in a calendar year with 1788 runs, which he scored in 2006.
