Defending Olympic badminton women's singles champion Carolina Marin announced on Tuesday that she will not compete at the Tokyo Olympics due to injury.

The Spaniard confirmed that she has picked up a knee injury which will require surgery and won't be fully recovered to defend her Olympic title in Tokyo. 27-year-old Marin was in red-hot form and had won the Swiss Open and the European Championships title as recently as May 2.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Marin defeated India's PV Sindhu to win the gold medal.
