The Election Commission on Tuesday took suo motu cognizance of the "free door-step ration delivery" announcement made by Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee while addressing a rally.

EC has sought a report on whether Mamata promised any new public welfare scheme during a public meeting on Monday, in violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) currently in place in the poll-bound Bengal.

The election body has also sought unedited videography of Banerjee's public meeting to ascertain the matter.
