Boxer Akash wins National title, unaware of a massive personal tragedy

Unaware of his mother's death, 20-year-old Akash Kumar reserved his berth in the World Championship by winning the national title on Monday. After winning the medal, Kumar went back home with just one thought in mind; of placing his medal at his mother's feet. Little did he know that he wouldn't even get to see his mother one last time. Kumar who won the national title in the 54-kg category, lost his mother a day before the tournament started. Santosh, his mother died of a lung infection after contracting a viral fever. She was admitted to a private hospital before Akash left his hometown Paluwas in Bhiwani for Bellary where the championship was held.

A heartbroken Akash who will now represent his nation in the World Championship in Belgrade told Indian Express that despite the hardships he will do justice to his talent in the upcoming game.
