In an attempt to speed up transition to renewable energy, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman promised 300 units of free electricity for houses that have set up solar panels on their rooftops.

Remember Prime Minister Narendra Modi, last month, announced a Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojna, a scheme to install rooftop solar systems in one crore houses.

The scheme, he said, will not only reduce the electricity bill of the poor and the middle class but will also make India self-reliant in the energy sector.
