The soaring prices of vegetables have pushed up the average cost of a vegetarian thali by 9% to 27.8 rupees in May, from 25.5 rupees last year, as per the report by CRISIL.
According to CRISIL's Roti Rice Rate report, the 39% surge in tomato prices, alongside a 41% increase in potato prices and a 43% rise in onion prices, is attributed to the low base of the previous fiscal year.

This contributed to the overall increase in the cost of the veg thali. Along with this, rice and pulses saw price hikes of 13% and 21%, respectively.
However, a drop in prices of cumin, chili, and vegetable oil prevented a further increase in the thali's cost.
Non-veg Thali
Conversely, the price of a non-vegetarian thali, featuring broiler instead of dal, decreased by 7% in May, costing 55.9 rupees compared to 59.9 rupees last year. Broilers contribute 50% of the thali's cost.
In April, the cost of preparing a non-veg thali was down 1% at 56.3 rupees.
