Contrary to recent confusion, a senior official has clarified to the mint that there is no ban on the import of IT hardware, laptops, tablets, and related products. This statement comes just a day after the Ministry's notification raised concerns about import restrictions.

The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology had, on Thursday, announced immediate limitations on the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers categorized under HSN 8741. However, the Secretary to the Ministry emphasized that this should not be misunderstood as a comprehensive import ban.

To streamline the import process, the official highlighted that the required licenses for such imports can be obtained within minutes. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade's online license portal facilitates this swift process. These licenses, once granted, remain valid for a duration of one year.

It was disclosed that two companies have already submitted their applications for import licenses. Moreover, the official clarified that businesses have the liberty to apply for multiple licenses, if needed.

In reassuring news for consumers, the official dispelled concerns about rising prices or disruptions in the transit of goods like laptops, tablets, and personal computers. The market should not expect any adverse impact on the availability and affordability of these products.

Furthermore, the official categorically stated that these import restrictions are unrelated to the alleged slow uptake of PLI 2.0 (Production-Linked Incentive 2.0) schemes. Reportedly, 44 companies, including industry giant HP, have already enrolled in the PLI 2.0 program.
