Infosys takes a stand on Ukraine war, exits Russia ops

Infosys has become the first major Indian IT company to cease its operations in Russia due to its offensive against Ukraine.

The IT major's chief Salil Parekh announced the decision of exiting Russia during the company's earnings results on Wednesday.

Infosys CEO and MD clarified that it has a small team of less than 100 of employees based out of Russia. The company also mentioned it doesn’t have any active business relationships with local Russian companies.

The software giant has been caught in the cross hairs of the Russia-Ukraine war as questions were raised to Narayana Murthy's son-in-law Britain's FM Rishi Sunak on why Infosys (in which his wife has stake) is still doing business in Russia. 

Infosys announced the launch of relief efforts worth $1 million for the victims of war in Ukraine.

Over 600 companies have announced they are voluntarily curtailing operations in Russia to some degree beyond what is required by international sanctions, as per a Yale Research report. Even as some companies have continued to operate in Russia undeterred, it said.

Major tech companies around the globe like Microsoft and Apple have completely stopped their sales in Russia.

Sony had suspended all software and hardware shipments to Russia, as well as the operation of the PlayStation Store in the country. Netflix also suspended its service and halted future projects in the country.

Google has suspended advertising, including on its search and YouTube products. YouTube said it would globally block all channels associated with Russian state-funded media, including RT and Sputnik.
