A battle between the world's richest person and the top court of South America's biggest country has left people in Brazil with a social media headache!
Users of X, formerly known as Twitter, in Brazil are stuck with a reload message, unable to log into the platform. But why has X suddenly stopped working in the country?
The disruption has come after Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court ordered the platform to be taken down. The verdict was the outcome of a long-running legal battle over disinformation.
The ruling came after Elon Musk's X failed to comply with the court's order to name a new legal representative for the company in Brazil - a requirement X rejected as "illegal."
Moraes and Musk have been locked in a high-profile feud for months as the judge has vowed to fight disinformation and Musk claims the supremacy of free speech.
The standoff began when Justice Moraes ordered the suspension of several X accounts belonging to supporters of Brazil's former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro had tried to discredit the voting systems used during the country's 2022 elections, which he lost.
The tensions escalated when Justice Moraes slammed Elon Musk in a recent ruling. He said, and I quote, "Elon Musk demonstrated his total disrespect for Brazilian sovereignty and, in particular, the judiciary, positioning himself as a true supranational entity, immune to the laws of countries." - End of quote.
Musk, the richest person in the world, fired back with outrage. He labeled Moraes as an "evil dictator cosplaying as a judge" and accused him of "trying to destroy democracy in Brazil," - an accusation that Brazil's leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva refuted.
The reaction from Brazil's citizens has been mixed. A poll conducted by AtlasIntel showed that 50.9% of the respondents disagreed with the decision to suspend X, while 48.1% agreed with it.
However, on the public feud between Musk and Moraes, the majority sided with the judge and said that X should have complied with earlier orders.
To enforce the suspension, Brazil's Supreme Court has also imposed a daily fine of about 8,900 dollars on those using virtual private networks or VPNs to access X.
However, this part of the verdict hasn't gone down well with the citizens, with 64.5% of those polled by AtlasIntel opposing the move.
While the ban in Brazil is a setback for X, which has struggled for ads since Musk purchased the company, the platform is not new to such clashes.
The European Union is currently probing the company for violation of its content moderation law called the Digital Services Act – a decision in the matter, including possible fines, is expected soon.
In fact, when the European Union opened the probe, Musk had responded on X saying “We look forward to a very public battle in court.”
