The Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year has been awarded to French scientist Emmanuelle Charpentier and American Jennifer A. Doudna for developing a method of genome editing known as the CRISPR-Cas9 DNA, likened to 'molecular scissors' that offer the promise of one day curing genetic diseases.
CRISPR is gene technology's sharpest stool, using these, researchers can change the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision. Te Nobel jury said, the technology has had a revolutionary impact on the life sciences, is contributing to new cancer therapies and may make the dream of curing inherited diseases come true.
The strangest thing about the win however, is that back in 2017, Charpentier and Doudna lost the legal battle for the patent of it - which went to a US company.
