China must build an impregnable fortress to maintain stability in Tibet, protect national unity and educate the masses in the struggle against splittism, said President Xi Jinping on Saturday.

Xi who praised the efforts of the frontline officials in Tibet was attending a senior Communist Party meeting on Tibet's governance.

He said China needed to strengthen the Communist Party's role in the territory in order to build a united, modern, socialist Tibet. Tibetan Buddhism needed to adapt to socialism and Chinese conditions, he added.

He emphasised on imparting political and ideological education in Tibet schools for planting the seeds of loving China in the depths of the heart of every youth.

China annexed Tibet in 1950 and went on to call it a 'peaceful liberation' for Tibet from its "feudalist" past.
