Assam: tension after murder of Bajrang Dal teen activist in Karimganj; restrictions imposed

With tension prevailing in Assam's Karimganj after the death of a Bajrang Dal activist, authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC.

The restrictions were imposed in Lowairpua Bazar area on 9 January 2023, while distribution of leaflets, posters, and banners has been banned in all of Karimganj.

On 8 January, Bajrang Dal member Sambhu Koiri was allegedly attacked and killed with sharp weapons. One person was arrested a day later, police said.

"Koiri was attacked with sharp weapons. Local people had immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, but the doctors there declared him dead on arrival," cops said.

Shortly after the incident, locals had gheraoed the Bazaricherra Police Station in the district, demanding arrest of the culprits. Additional forces were also deployed in the area.
