As the country gears up for grand Diwali celebrations, a village in Tamil Nadu has a different idea of celebration. Located at the Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary in Sivagangai district, it will not burst firecrackers for the safety of its birds. Instead the people of the village will celebrate the beauty and grace of the wide variety of migratory birds that seek shelter there. The practice has now become a tradition over the last 30 years, as the birds come in October only to depart in February. Setting an example for many across the world, the village took a firm decision many years back and is now leading by example.
