A Dominica court has put the deportation of fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi on hold. Choksi was arrested in the Carribbean Island after trying to flee to Cuba from Antigua on a boat. Antigua PM had asked the Dominca authorities to send Choksi directly to India saying he didn't want the bank scam accused in his country.
Choksi's legal team contested extradition saying that the wanted businessman cannot be sent to India as he is is no longer a citizen of the country.
Choksi had fled India in 2017 and had take Antigua citizenship after being accused in the ₹14,000 crore Punjab National Bank scam.
Choksi's lawyers also dubbed his entire escape bid and arrest as "fishy" claiming that Choksi told them that he was abducted from Jolly Harbour in Antigua and was put on a vessel.
