6 Bollywood movies inspired by Indian mythology

India is home to some of the oldest religions of the world like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Islam, and Christianity. Our country is deeply rooted in culture and it has been highlighted in several movies to great effect.

Here’s a look at some of the Bollywood movies inspired by Indian mythology that you should watch.

‘Adipurush’ (2023)

The forthcoming film, directed by Om Raut, is based on Indian epic Ramayana. It has been shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages. The film stars Prabhas as Raghava, Kriti Sanon as Janaki, and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh.

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022)

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film won many hearts with its stunning visual effects and action. Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer was massively influenced by Hindu mythology. It chronicled the journey Shiva, an orphan, who has the power to control fire, and a connection to a secret society of guardians.
‘Brahmastra’ is one of the most expensive Hindi films. It also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna Akkineni.

Raavan (2010)

Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, and Govinda, this action-adventure film is inspired by the Indian epic Ramayana. It is a modern take on the beloved Ramayana.In the film, Beera, a bandit, kidnaps a police officer’s wife but he eventually falls in love with her. The film was criticized by some, while others praised it for its gorgeous visuals, performances, and action sequences.

Baahubali: The beginning (2015)

This action-packed film, directed by SS Rajamouli, took the Indian audience by storm in 2015. Starring Prabhas, Tamannaah Bhatia, Anushka Shetty and Rana Daggubati, the film with some of the best visual effects, narrated the story of the kingdom of Mahishmati. A villager learns of his royal past and sets out to claim his birthright as the king by overthrowing his deceitful uncle.
‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ and its 2017 sequel were massive box office hits.

Raajneeti (2010)

The Prakash Jha directorial is a modern version of the Indian mythological epic Mahabharata. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgn and Katrina Kaif, the film is about a longstanding feud between two rival political families.
The political thriller fared well at the box office and received 4 Filmfare award nominations.

Return of Hanuman (2007)

This animated action-adventure comedy is a modern take on a Hindu God, Lord Hanuman. The Anurag Kashyap directorial shows how Lord Hanuman takes birth as a human to help a bullied boy. However, after evil asuras come to Earth, he has to defend the realm.
