Actor Rani Mukerji has won several hearts with her powerful portrayal of characters on-screen and her charming personality.    

Rani made her debut in Bollywood with the 1996 social drama, ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’ where she played a rape victim. She then went on to act in a plethora of films, ranging from comedies to intense movies. Her latest release is ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’, in which she plays an immigrant Indian mother who fights the Norwegian foster care system to win back custody of her children.  

Let's revisit some of her bold characters in iconic movies.  

Hichki (2018)  

Director: Siddharth P. Malhotra  

Cast: Rani Mukerji  

The film narrates the story of a woman who suffers from a rare speech disorder, termed Tourette syndrome. She gets a teaching job in an elite school and turns her weakness into her biggest strength.  

Mardaani (2014)  

Director: Pradeep Sarkar  

Cast: Rani Mukerji, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jisshu Sengupta, Saanand Verma, Avneet Kaur  

Rani Mukerji made heads turn as she played the role of a strongly dedicated officer of the Mumbai Police. Senior Inspector Shivani Shivaji Roy works hard to uncover a Delhi-based child trafficking cartel.

No One Killed Jessica (2011)  

Director: Raj Kumar Gupta  

Cast: Vidya Balan, Rani Mukerji  

Rani played an investigative journalist in this crime thriller. The film tells the true story of model Jessica Lall, who was shot dead in a restaurant. Meera, the journalist, is seen joining forces with the victim’s sister Sabrina Lal to seek justice for Jessica, who was murdered by the son of an influential politician.  

Black (2005)  

Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali  

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukerji  

Rani plays Michelle, a girl, with visual and hearing impairment. With the help of her stubborn teacher Debraj, she explores her potential and takes on the challenge of graduating college.  

Veer Zaara (2004)  

Director: Yash Chopra  

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji  

In this classic cross-border romance, Rani portrayed the role of a female human rights lawyer, who was hellbent to free an Indian Airforce officer from a Pakistani jail cell for a crime he never committed.
