Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia and actor Anusuya Sengupta made the entire nation proud at the Cannes 2024. Besides, the FTII students also won an award at the prestigious film festival. While the film industry and netizens have been showering praises at the artists, Anupam Kher also shared his two cents on the proud moment.
While praising Payal Kapadia and Anusuya Sengupta, Anupam Kher said that ‘unknown people’ were getting recognition at such platforms now. “Content is very important nowadays. It always was, but now the audience is different. Look at what happened at Cannes- we have two unknown people getting the highest honours. It’s phenomenal,” Kher said in an interview to News 18 Showsha.
Kher also commented on Nancy Tyagi’s Cannes debut and said, “A Delhi girl walked on the red carpet stitching her own dress. The world is open to creativity- it always was, but now India is open to creativity. What doesn’t touch heart doesn’t make an impact. I think, it’s the end of fakeness.”
Kher also mentioned ‘less-deserving’ Bollywood celebrities and said, “So many less deserving people in these 43 years have come and gone. Do you remember who was trending on X, Instagram or otherwise? Do you remember how many films made 200 crores last year? But you will remember a film that touched your heart. Less deserving things happen only for a flash of time.”
India witnessed its most successful year at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine as Light’ won the Grand Prix award, the second highest honour at the festival. It is also the first Indian film win the honour. On the other hand, Anasuya Sengupta won the Un Certain Regard Prize for Best Actress for her role in ‘The Shameless’. Santosh Sivan received the Pierre Angenieux ExcelLens in Cinematography during the film festival.
