Veteran actor Asha Parekh recently attended the ongoing 53rd International Film Festival of India in Goa. During a session, she said that she finds it hurtful that Indian women prefer to wear western dresses and gowns for their weddings instead of traditional dresses.
‘Everything has changed. The films that are being made. I do not know, we are so westernised. Gowns pehen ke wedding pe aa rahi hain ladkiyan. Arre bhaiya, humari ghaghra choli, saariyan aur salwar-kameez hai aap wo pehno na. Why don’t you wear those?’(Why don’t they wear our ghagra choli, saree and salwar-kameez), she wondered.
Asha Parekh said the girls today just watch the heroines onscreen and wish to copy them.
A few days ago, on the podcast ‘What The Hell Navya’ Jaya Bachchan too voiced a similar opinion. The veteran actor asked her daughter Shweta Bachchan and granddaughter Navya Nanda why Indian women are wearing more western clothes.
Jaya said that women feel western clothing gives manpower to a woman.
