Happy Birthday Govinda: 5 films that made him Bollywood’s comedy king

Govinda is among the most popular Bollywood stars of the 90s. The ultimate king of comedy has starred in numerous films with ‘No 1’ in the title. In a career spanning over three decades, the actor has acted in over 165 films and won numerous awards.

Let’s look at 5 of his most iconic roles in super hit films.

Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999) 
Starring Govinda, Sanjay Dutt, Karisma Kapoor and Pooja Batra, this romantic comedy film shows how Amirchand tries to keep his mischievous sons apart by assigning them different tasks. Sonu leaves for Goa, while Monu stays back in Mumbai to look after the family business. Chaos ensues begins when Monu disguises and reaches Goa to meet his brother and they fall in love with Gulzarilal Verma’s daughters.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) 
The David Dhawan directorial starred Govinda alongside legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, Raveena Tandon and Ramya Krishnan. The film focuses on two police officers Arjun and Pyare who get framed for various crimes. After the duo investigates, they learn that the crimes are committed by their lookalikes.

Hero No 1 (1997) 
The David Dhawan directorial starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor with an ensemble supporting cast of actors. An industrialist’s son Rajesh falls in love with Meena during a foreign trip and they decide to get married. However, Meena’s parents object, and Rajesh decides to win them over in a quirky way.

Coolie No 1 (1995) 
This film was a remake of the 1993 Tamil film ‘Chinna Mapillai’. Directed by David Dhawan, the film starred Govinda opposite Karisma Kapoor. He portrayed the role of a Coolie, named Raju. A matchmaker sets out to teach an arrogant wealthy man, Hoshiyar Chand, a lesson and hatches a plan to get his daughter Malti married to Raju. Raju pretends to be a millionaire to woo Hoshiyar Chand's daughter. 
Govinda received Star Screen Award Special Jury Award for this film as 'performer of the decade'. The film was remade in 2020 with the same name.

Raja Babu (1994) 
Govinda starred alongside Karisma Kapoor in the David Dhawan directorial. An orphan, named Raja, is adopted by a rich village couple. He falls in love with a city girl, but she leaves him after learning that he is not a well-educated man that he portrays himself to be.
