Happy Birthday, Juhi Chawla: Here a look at some of her notable performances

Juhi Chawal, one of the most bankable actors, is celebrating her birthday today. The actor won the Miss India title in 1984 and started her Bollywood career with the film, ‘Sultanat’ (1986).  She gained major recognition with her performance in the film ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ (1988). She is known for her infectious smile and exceptional acting skills.  

On Juhi Chawla’s special day, let’s revisit some of her most popular performances. 

‘Darr’ (1993)  

Juhi Chawla co-starred with Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan in this romantic psychological thriller. She played the role of Kiran Awasthi, who was stalked by obsessive lover Rahul Mehra, her classmate, in the Yash Chopra directorial. Juhi’s performance in the film was highly appreciated by the audience as well as critics. The movie was declared a blockbuster at the box-office and it emerged as the third-highest-grossing film of the year. 

‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’ (1993)  

The romantic comedy-drama, starring Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan, was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The film’s plot was inspired by the 1958 film ‘Houseboat’. Juhi’s performance in the film was widely appreciated and she even bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Actress at the 39th Filmfare Awards.  

‘Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke’ also won the National Film Award – Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film), and the Filmfare Award for Best Film. 

‘Andaz’ (1994)  

Directed by David Dhawan, this action-comedy starred Juhi Chawla and Anil Kapoor among others. The film was a remake of the Tamil film ‘Sundara Kandam’. Juhi's performance as Saraswati, an illiterate orphan girl, was hailed by the audience as well as the critics. The film went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year. 

‘Ishq’ (1997)  

The romantic action-comedy, starring Juhi Chawla, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Kajol, was directed by Indra Kumar. Juhi played the role of Madhu Saxena, a girl belonging to a rich family, who falls in love with a poor mechanic. She received appreciation for her role and the film was one of the highest-grossing films of 1997.  

‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ (1988)  

Directed by Mansoor Khan, the film starred Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla. The film revolves around Raj and Rashmi belong to two rival families. They fall in love and decide to get married despite severe opposition from their families. The actors bagged the Filmfare Awards for their performance. The film also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
