Happy birthday, Rajinikanth: A look at megastar’s popular Bollywood films

Superstar Rajinikanth is known for his unique style of dialogue delivery and intense acting. In a career spanning five decades, he has done approximately 160 films in multiple languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Malayalam. The actor has won several accolades including Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award among others for his contribution to Indian cinema.  

Let’s take a look at some of his popular Bollywood films:  

‘Aatank Hi Aatank’ (1995)  

The crime-action drama, directed by Dilip Shankar, starred Rajinikanth, Aamir Khan, and Juhi Chawla in the lead role. The film is loosely inspired by the crime novel ‘The Godfather', written by Mario Puzo.  Rajinikanth portrayed the role of Munna, an orphan boy.  

Shiv Charan Sharma, a farmer, becomes a ganglord along with his adoptive son after being thrown out of their village. However, the rival gangsters plot to kill them. 

Hum (1991)  

Rajinikanth starred alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in this crime-action drama, directed by Mukul S. Anand. He starred as Kumar Malhotra, a police inspector. Tiger vows to murder Bakhtawar after he kills his father but Inspector Giridhar stops him. Later, Giridhar steals from Bakhtawar and kills his family but blames Tiger for it. 

ChaalBaaz (1989)  

The comedy-drama starred Rajnikanth, Sri Devi, and Sunny Deol in the lead role. Directed by Pankaj Parashar, the film revolves around separated twin sisters Anju and Manju who have grown up in different circumstances. They accidentally switch places and a shy Anju starts living a rustic life, while bold Manju takes revenge from their evil uncle. 

Rajinikanth played the role of a Taxi driver and his role left the audience impressed. 

Bewafai (1985)  

Directed by R. Thyagarajan, this box office hit starred Rajinikanth and Rajesh Khanna in the lead role. The story revolves around a woman who is in love with her father's employee since her childhood but could not express it. Rajnikanth portrayed the role of Ranveer. The film also starred Tina Munim, Meenakshi Sheshadri, and Padmini Kolhapure.  

Andha Kanoon (1983)  

This film, directed by T. Rama Rao, marked Rajnikanth’s Bollywood debut. It also starred Hema Malini and Reena Roy among others. Rajinikanth portrayed the role of an angry young man who vows to take revenge against the antagonist who killed his family.
