Actor Imran Khan opened up about his divorce for the first time in a recent interview. The ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ actor confirmed he has separated from Avantika Malik and their divorce came through in 2019.
He disclosed he's now dating Lekha Washington and expressed frustration over the portrayal of his girlfriend as a 'homewrecker.' He clarified that he fell in love with Lekha post-divorce, during the lockdown.
‘The speculation that I’m romantically involved with Lekha Washington is true. I’m divorced and have been separated since February 2019,’ he told Vogue India.
He said, ‘Lekha and I grew close during the lockdown, a year and a half after I had been separated from Avantika and almost a year after she had separated from her partner, not husband, as it has been widely reported.’
Imran also addressed the rumours portraying Lekha as a ‘homewrecker,’ labelling such narratives as ‘misogynistic.’
‘There’s this narrative of Lekha being a homewrecker, which infuriates me, because not only is it misogynistic but it also takes away my agency as an individual,’ he said.
Lekha Washington, based in Mumbai, is not only an artist but has also ventured into acting, particularly in Telugu cinema.
Imran has maintained a private stance on his personal life since stepping away from the film industry. Despite rumours about his relationship status, he remained silent, even during the speculation surrounding his divorce in 2019.
However, his reemergence on Instagram brought him back into the spotlight. There are rumours of Imran making a comeback in films, with potential collaboration with his ‘Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na’ director, Abbas Tyrewala, although nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
Imran and Lekha were seen together at various events over the past year, including Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan’s wedding. They were observed enjoying themselves with Ira and her husband Nupur Shikhare. Despite their appearances together, the couple maintains their relationship away from the public eye.
