National Film Awards 2024: Top 5 highlights from the ceremony

1- Double win for ‘Brahmastra’: Karan Johar and Ayan Mukerji attended the National Film Awards ceremony as their film starring Ranbir Kapoor won 2 awards. The film won Best Film in Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics category along with the Best VFX Film Award.

2- Huge applause for AR Rahman: The Indian music legend bagged the Best Music Direction award for the film ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’. He received a warm applause and cheers from the audience as he got up to receive the honour.  

3- Mani Ratnam’s film sweeps most awards: ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ emerged as the biggest winner of the year. Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus bagged the awards for ‘Best Cinematography’, ‘Best Sound Design’, ‘Best Music Direction’, and ‘Best Tamil Feature Film’.  

4- ‘Kantara’ and Rishab Shetty’s win: Actor-director Rishab Shetty received the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for ‘Kantara’ while the film also won the ‘Best Popular Film’ award.  

5- Mithun Da receives award with arm cast: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty received the most prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award for his contribution to Indian cinema. The actor made it to the ceremony despite an injury and was wearing an arm brace.
