Global star Priyanka Chopra posed with her daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas for the February 2023 issue of British Vogue. She shared her first covershoot with the little one on Thursday. During the interview with the magazine, Priyanka revealed why she opted for surrogacy.
The actor, who was accused of ‘outsourcing’ pregnancy, ‘renting’ a womb, and acquiring a ‘ready-made baby’ via a surrogate, was asked if she was expecting the kind of reaction she received after becoming a mom.
She told British Vogue, ‘I’ve developed a tough hide when people talk about me. But it’s so painful when they talk about my daughter. I’m like, ‘Keep her out of it.’ I know what it felt like to hold her little hands when they were trying to find her veins. So no, she’s not going to be gossip. I’ve been really protective of this chapter of my life with my daughter. Because it’s not about my life only. It’s hers too.’
Without giving much details, Priyanka Chopra said that they chose the route of surrogacy as she had medical complications.
The actor added, ‘This was a necessary step, and I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.’
She then talked about the days when their daughter was still in the NICU and she ‘didn’t know if she (Malti) would make it or not.’
‘I was in the OR [operating room] when she came out. She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive-care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed [in her tiny body] to intubate her,’ she said.
Malti Marie was born a trimester before the due date and spent some time in the hospital before Priyanka and Nick could take her home.
Priyanka Chopra tied the knot with singer Nick Jonas in Rajasthan in December 2018. The couple announced the news of their daughter's birth via a surrogate in January 2022.
