Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh who died in Pakistan jail in 2013, passed away on Saturday night. Her last rites were performed at her native Bhikhiwind village in Punjab's Tarn Taran district. Actor Randeep Hooda, who played the lead role in the Sarabjit Singh biopic, was present at the cremation to fulfill a promise he had made to her post the release of the film.
During an event held in remembrance of Sarabjit on his third death anniversary, Dalbir Kaur had told the actor that his performance as Sarabjit touched her heart and she could see her brother in him. She made him promise that he would offer his shoulder to carry her body when she dies.
Randeep, who is known to have a close bond with Sarabjit's family, reportedly also lit the pyre.
According to Hindustan Times, Dalbir's family members said that she complained of severe chest pain on Saturday night and was rushed to a private hospital in Bhikhiwind where she died after a few hours.
Dalbir Kaur had persistently fought for 22 years for her brother Sarabjit's release from a Pakistani prison after he was sentenced to death by a Pakistani court in 1991 for spying and died after being attacked by fellow inmates in Lahore in 2013.
