Veteran actor-filmmaker Satish Kaushik died in Delhi on March 9. A day before his death, Satish Kaushik attended the Holi party hosted by Javed Akhtar at his home in Mumbai and shared some pictures from the bash on social media.
Here’s a quick look at his life and career.
Satish was born on April 13, 1956, in Mahendragarh, Haryana. He graduated from Kirori Mal College in Delhi in 1972. He was also an alumnus of the National School of Drama the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
In 1979, Satish Kaushik came to Mumbai from Delhi to achieve his dream of becoming an actor. Before venturing into Bollywood, he worked as a cashier for a year in a textile mill to meet his financial needs. After finishing his job, he used to go to Prithvi Theatre and do plays, and then gradually films came his way.
As an actor, Satish Kaushik was best known for his roles as Calendar in Anil Kapoor starrer ‘Mr. India’, as Pappu Pager in ‘Deewana Mastana’, and as Chanu Ahmed in the British film ‘Brick Lane’ (2007). He won the Filmfare Best Comedian Award twice – for Ram Lakhan in 1990 and for ‘Saajan Chale Sasural’ in 1997.
As a theatre actor, his most noted role was that of Willy Loman in the Hindi-language play, ‘Salesman Ramlal’, an adaptation of Arthur Miller's ‘Death of a Salesman’.
Besides acting, Satish Kaushik wrote dialogues for Kundan Shah's comedy classic ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’ (1983).
He made his directorial debut with Sridevi's ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ (1993). His second directorial venture was ‘Prem’ (1995). Both films were box office disasters. His first hit film as a director was ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’ in 1999.
He co-wrote and anchored a TV countdown show, ‘Philips Top Ten’, for which he won the Screen Videocon Award.
In 2007 Kaushik, Satish Kaushik launched a new film company called Karol Bagh Productions along with his friend with Anupam Kher, who had been his batchmate at National School of Drama. Their first film, ‘Teree Sang’, was directed by Satish.
Personal life
Satish Kaushik married Shashi Kaushik in 1985. They welcomed their son, Shanu Kaushik, in 1994 but he died when he was just two years old. In 2012, his daughter Vanshika was born through a surrogate mother.
