A Mumbai Court on Monday discharged Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty, who had been accused of obscenity and indecency in an incident where co-accused Richard Gere had publicly hugged and kissed her.

As per reports, Ms. Shetty was the ‘victim’ in a controversial kiss involving Hollywood star Richard Gere, the court decided. The court also said that not a single element of any of the alleged offences is satisfied in the complaint.

The incident happened at an AIDS awareness event held in Rajasthan in 2007, post which citizens in large numbers protested in many cities including Varanasi, Bhopal, Kanpur, Delhi and Mumbai.

Shilpa had reportedly claimed discharge from the case on the grounds that the only allegation against her is that she did not protest when Gere kissed her, but that does not make her a conspirator or perpetrator of the crime. She had further contended that the complaint was baseless and that she was being targeted due to her celebrity status.
