Sushmita Sen reflected on her crowning achievement as Miss Universe in 1994. She celebrated the 30th anniversary of this momentous event by sharing a throwback picture with her daughter, Renee, and reminiscing about her decision to adopt at the age of 18.
Sushmita made history as the first Indian to win the Miss Universe title on May 21, 1994.
Taking to Instagram, she wrote, ‘This little girl, who I met in an orphanage, taught an 18 yr old me, life’s most innocent yet profound lessons, ones that I live by to this day. This captured moment is 30 yrs old today as is India’s first ever Victory at Miss Universe!!!.’
Reflecting on winning the first-ever Miss Universe title for India, Sushmita expressed how it became her ‘identity and strength.’ She wrote, ‘What a journey it’s been & continues to be… Thank you India for always being my greatest identity & strength!! Thank you Philippines for the unending love & belonging… Three decades & counting!! #mahalkita. I remember & celebrate your grace, my beautiful @carogomezfilm #teamo.’
Sushmita also expressed gratitude to her fans, everyone who motivated her, and her family. She wrote, ‘To all my beloved fans, friends, family & well-wishers around the world... know that each one of you has made a difference in my life & inspired me in ways you may never know!! I feel the love!!! Thank you!!! WHAT AN HONOUR!!!

Sushmita Sen initially competed in the Miss India pageant in 1994, where she competed against Aishwarya Rai and emerged victorious. Despite considering withdrawing her application upon learning about Aishwarya's participation, Sushmita's mother convinced her to continue.
Sushmita's most recent appearance was in the third season of Disney+ Hotstar series ‘Aarya.’
