Comedian and actor Jo Koy has been chosen to host the Golden Globes, selected by producers for his ‘infectious energy and relatable humor.’

Koy's film ‘Easter Sunday’ made history as the first major studio movie with an all-Filipino ensemble. He has released five stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, including his most recent Netflix special, ‘Live From The Los Angeles Forum.’

The Golden Globes, which have faced scandal and challenges in recent years, are set to take place on January 7, marking Koy's first major award show hosting gig.

‘We are thrilled to have Jo host the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards and bring his infectious energy and relatable humor to kick off Hollywood’s award season,’ said Helen Hoehne, Golden Globes president, in a statement. ‘We know Jo is bringing his A-game,’ she added.

‘I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. I’m so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year. This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud,’ said Koy in a statement.

Greta Gerwig's film ‘Barbie’ has garnered nine nominations, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), as well as acting nods for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and recognition for three original songs. It is closely followed by Christopher Nolan's ‘Oppenheimer,’ which received eight nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), and acting nominations for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.

The Golden Globes' voting body has grown to 300 members, expanding in response to criticism after a 2021 report in the Los Angeles Times revealed that the group, previously consisting of only 87 foreign journalists, had no Black members.

The 81st Golden Globes will be the season's first major awards broadcast, airing on CBS as its new home. Historically, the Globes have been one of the most prominent awards shows, second only to the Oscars. Before the pandemic, it attracted around 19 million viewers and was known for its boozy, A-list party atmosphere and more irreverent tone compared to the Oscars.
