British actor Julian Sands, best known for his role in the film ‘A Room with a View,’ was confirmed dead on June 27, five months after he went missing on a hike in the snowy mountains of southern California. He was 65.

Hikers discovered skeletal human remains in the mountains outside of Los Angeles on June 25, in the vicinity where Sands had vanished. They were identified by the San Bernardino County coroner as belonging to the actor, the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

‘The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results,’ he added.

Sands, an avid outdoorsman, and mountaineer, was reported missing on January 13, after he had gone hiking alone in the Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel Mountains, about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Los Angeles.

Sands’ family in a statement on June 21 thanked the Californian authorities for their efforts in trying to locate him.

They said, ‘We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, love of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer’.

Born in England, Sands began his career with supporting roles in such films as ‘Oxford Blues,’ and ‘The Killing Fields’. He moved to California in the 1980s after the success of ‘A Room with a View’.

Some of his other best-known work includes ‘Warlock’ and its sequel, ‘Arachnophobia’, ‘Boxing Helena’ and ‘Leaving Las Vegas.’ His TV roles included ‘24’ and ‘Smallville’.
