Disney has collaborated with Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson to develop a live-action remake of its 2016 animated musical sensation ‘Moana’. The production is reportedly in the early stages. No director has been announced, but Dwayne will return as the demigod Maui.
Dwayne Johnson shared the news on social media along with a video and wrote, ‘This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.’
Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original, will be an executive producer on the live-action version.
‘Moana’, was inspired by Polynesian myths, history, and culture and was praised for its efforts at cultural authenticity. It was a massive hit for Disney in 2016, earning $643.3 million worldwide.
