Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor, best known for her single 'Nothing Compares 2 U', has died aged 56.

The singer's family announced the news via a statement and said her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.

'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,' the singer’s family said in a statement reported by the BBC and RTE.

The cause of her death hasn't been revealed so far.

Tributes have been pouring in from fans and celebrities on social media.

Sinéad O'Connor, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, had been public about her mental illness. She posted a Facebook video in 2017 from a New Jersey motel where she had been living, saying that she was staying alive for the sake of others and that if it were up to her, she’d be 'gone'.

O’Connor's teenage son Shane died by suicide last year.

The singer's final tweet, sent July 17, read: 'For all mothers of Suicided children,' and linked to a Tibetan compassion mantra.
