‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ is making headlines for all the wrong reasons!
Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga as the infamous Clown Prince of Crime and Harley Quinn, the film debuted to shockingly poor reviews this month.
It only managed to snag $40 million domestically in its opening week, totaling a disappointing $121.1 million globally.
To break even, the film needs a staggering $450 million, but with its plummeting box office performance, that goal seems increasingly out of reach.
Reports from The Hollywood Reporter reveal that the sequel suffered an unprecedented 81% drop in ticket sales during its second week, marking the worst decline ever for a comic book movie.
Previously, ‘The Marvels’ held the record with a 78% drop.
Currently, ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ stands at $165.3 million overall.
Meanwhile, ‘Terrifier 3’ is dominating the domestic box office with a weekend full of curiosity and chaos. Cineverse and Icon Events' latest slasher installment exceeded expectations, raking in an estimated $18.2 million from 1,988 theaters.
In a distant second, ‘The Wild Robot’ continues to shine for DreamWorks Animation and Universal. In its third weekend, the family-friendly flick is projected to earn another $13.4 million from 3,854 cinemas, bringing its domestic total to $83.7 million. It also secured an additional $24 million internationally, resulting in a global haul of $148.5 million.
More about the film
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 film ‘Joker,’ which became a cultural phenomenon, winning Joaquin Phoenix an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Directed by Todd Phillips, the sequel continues to explore the complexities of Arthur Fleck's psyche while delving deeper into his tumultuous relationship with Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga.
Initial reviews have been mixed, with some praising the performances and artistic direction while others criticize the narrative and tonal shifts. The film's ambitious approach to blending psychological drama with musical elements has been both lauded and challenged by critics.
