Kalki 2898 AD director Nag Ashwin is thrilled with the film’s blockbuster success at the box office. Starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, the film has grossed over Rs 700 crore globally within a week of its release. In a recent interview, Nag Ashwin discussed plans for the film’s sequel.
In an interview with Times Now/Zoom, Ashwin revealed that he has already filmed about 20 percent of the second part of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’.
‘The next one is a while off because it’s not really shot yet. It’s shot for about 20 to 30 days,’ the filmmaker said, before adding, ‘I’d say at best 20 percent (is ready). At best 20 percent because the big stuff is still remaining. We have to get that right.’
Ashwin also hinted that while Haasan has a limited role in ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, the sequel will be entirely focused on the Tamil superstar.
Haasan plays Supreme Yaskin, a despotic ruler overseeing the resource-rich Complex, in the film. ‘It’s fully him being the antagonist,’ Ashwin added.
‘Kalki 2898 AD’, heavily inspired by the Mahabharata, is set in a dystopian future and follows four main characters: SUM-80 (Deepika Padukone), a pregnant woman believed to be carrying the 10th avatar of Vishnu; the immortal Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan), tasked with protecting the unborn child; Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan), a ruthless villain who wants the child dead to prevent his own demise; and Bhairava (Prabhas), a bounty hunter willing to sell anyone for money.
The film recorded the third biggest opening in Indian cinema, with a massive Rs 191.8 crore box office collection worldwide on day one. This impressive opening surpassed the global records of ‘KGF 2’ (Rs 159 crore), ‘Salaar’ (Rs 158 crore), ‘Leo’ (Rs 142.75 crore), ‘Saaho’ (Rs 130 crore), and ‘Jawan’ (Rs 129 crore). However, ‘RRR’ remains the highest Indian opener with Rs 223 crore, followed by ‘Baahubali 2’ with over Rs 217 crore on its opening day.
