The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) on October 14 shared that more than six million cinemagoers went to the theatres on the occasion of National Cinema Day, that was celebrated on October 13.
MAI on National Cinema Day 2023
Over 4000 screens including cinema chains like PVR INOX, Cinepolis, Miraj, Citypride, Mukta A2, Movie Time, Wave, M2K, Moviemax, Rajhans, NY Cinemas, Delite and others gave out tickets on prices as low as Rs 99. "A record number of 6 million (estimated) moviegoers visited their local cinema to celebrate the National Cinema Day. In every corner, audiences of all ages came together to record an unprecedented demand for movie tickets, and the country's cinema operators reported house-full shows throughout the day, making 13 October the second highest-attended day of the year 2023," the MAI said in a press note.
"The overwhelming response to this initiative reaffirms the timeless and enduring appeal of the theatrical experience. We extend our heartfelt 'Thank You' to the millions of movie fans who made this year's National Cinema Day a massive success," it added.
Ticket prices slashed for these films
Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Jawan’ and Akshay Kumar's ‘Raniganj’ were among the movies available for ₹99 on National Cinema Day. There were also discounts on new releases like ‘Dhak Dhak’, ‘Thank You for Coming’, and ‘Fukrey 3’.
Why is national Cinema Day celebrated?
National Cinema Day’s initiative was taken by the Multiplex Association of India in 2022 to commemorate the reopening of cinema halls after the COVID-19 pandemic. It was decided that discounts would be given on ticket prices to encourage people to support cinema halls.
