Kartiki Gonsalves' directorial debut 'The Elephant Whisperers', a film about the magical bond between two caretakers and their abandoned elephant, has won an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature Film category. The Netflix documentary was competing against 'Haulout', 'How Do You Measure a Year?', 'The Martha Mitchell Effect' and 'Stranger at the Gate'.
'The Elephant Whisperers' has become the first-ever film from India to win an Oscar. The documentary has been produced by Guneet Monga.
Earlier, two entries set in India –‘Period. End Of Sentence’ and ‘Smile Pinki’, won Oscars for Documentary Short. Monga was the executive produce for the former.
