It’s been a blockbuster week for Nag Ashwin directorial Kalki 2898 AD. The sci-fi epic hit the theatres last Thursday and has shattered multiple records. Prabhas starrer has minted Rs 700 crores worldwide in just 1 week.
Vyjayanthi Movies, producers behind the mythological sci-fi film, shared the update on their X handle. They shared a poster featuring Deepika and bold 700 crores global box office collection written on it. “The dream run continues....,” read the caption of the post.
The film has reportedly grossed over Rs 468 crores in domestic markets across all languages. With the film holding strong, it is expected to continue the box office storm this weekend as well. Besides, there is no other big competition at the domestic box office.
‘Kalki 2898 AD’ created history at the box office by becoming the third biggest opener in Indian cinema. It earned a massive Rs 191 crore globally on its opening day. It achieved the third-highest domestic opening ever, trailing only ‘Baahubali 2’ and ‘RRR’.
‘Kalki 2898 AD’ blends sci-fi with mythological themes. Prabhas portrays Bhairava, a bounty hunter from Kashi, while Deepika plays SUM-80, a pregnant test subject. Amitabh embodies Ashwatthama from Indian mythology, and Kamal Haasan portrays Supreme Yaskin, leader of the Complex. The film follows Bhairava's quest to secure enough units to reside in the Complex, hindered by Ashwatthama.
Besides Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone, the cast includes Disha Patani as Roxie, with cameos by Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Dulquer Salmaan, Faria Abdullah, and others. Set 6000 years post the Mahabharata's Kurukshetra war, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ explores this futuristic narrative. It is touted as one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. Its production budget totals over ₹600 crore, or US$75 million.
