The makers of ‘Heermandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ have a big announcement. While the fans are yet to get over the magnum opus, Netflix and Bhansali productions have announced a second season of the series.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ made its way to become the most-viewed Indian series on Netflix globally within the first week of its premiere. The series has been holding on to the number 1 spot in top 10 list of the streamer. Thanks to its popularity, the makers have decided on another season of the hit show.
The season 2 was announced with a beautiful event at Mumbai’s Carter road, where a flash mob of 100 dancers performed on the songs from the series. The video of the same was shared by Netflix and Bhansali productions on Instagram with the caption, “Mehfil phir se jamegi, Heeramandi: Season 2 jo aayega.”
Not only the fans, but even the stars of the hit series are excited for the season 2. Aditi Rao Hydari, who played Bibbojaan in the series, took to the comment section to express her excitement. She wrote, “Whoa!!!!! This is amazing.” Another actor Taha Shah, who played Tajdaa, wrote, “Dang” along with heart emojis. Shrutii Sharma who played Saima in ‘Heeramandi’ wrote, “Woaahhh, super excited.” Sanjeeda Shaikh wrote, “Mashallahhhh.”
The second season of the series will showcase the journey of Tawaifs from Lahore to the film industry. After the partition, a lot of women from Heeramandi leave Lahore and settle in Mumbai and Kolkata, where they establish career in entertainment industry.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali spoke to Variety and confirmed the season 2 in the interview. He said, “In ‘Heeramandi 2,’ the women now come from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs. So that’s the second season we are planning, let’s see where it goes.”
The first season of the limited series, streaming on Netflix, took three years of production work including 350 shooting days. The series starrred Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal and Fardeen Khan in lead roles.
