‘Student of the Year 3’ on cards? Karan Johar reveals it will be a web series, won't be directed by him

Filmmaker Karan Johar talked about ‘Student of the Year 3’ at the Cinevesture International Film Festival (CIFF) in Chandigarh and mentioned that it will web series that will be directed by Reema Maya, known for her work in ‘Nocturnal Burger’, according to TOI. 

Discussing his collaboration with fresh talent, Karan Johar cited Reema Maya as an example, revealing that she will direct the digital adaptation of ‘Student of the Year.’

He added, ‘But it will be her way and definitely not mine because if I’ll enter Reema Maya’s world, then I will make it more of an illusion, which is what her name means. I just wanted it to be her voice. She made it her own series.’

Who is Reema Maya?

Reema, an accomplished writer-director and co-founder of Catnip production house, is renowned for her independent filmmaking. Her short films, such as ‘Counterfeit Kunkoo,’ have garnered acclaim at prestigious film festivals like Sundance. Her latest project, ‘Nocturnal Burger,’ premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023. Additionally, she has directed videos for prominent brands like Netflix, Red Bull, and boAt.

About ‘Student of the Year’ franchise

Karan Johar launched Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, and Varun Dhawan in Bollywood with ‘Student Of The Year’ in 2012. He later produced ‘Student Of The Year 2,’ directed by Puneet Malhotra, starring Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday, and Tara Sutaria.

A few reports suggested that Karan Johar intends to cast Shanaya Kapoor in the web series adaptation of a film franchise. Shanaya, preparing for her debut in Mohanlal's 'Vrushabha', was also expected to enter the OTT realm. However, her anticipated debut in Dharma Productions' 'Bedhadak', alongside Laksh Lalwani and Gurfateh Pirzada, has reportedly been delayed.

On the work front, Karan Johar’s last directorial was ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. He teased fans with the announcement of a film in January but didn’t disclose the title or the cast.
