Germany would look to bury their demons of a nightmare 2018 World Cup, as they head into Euro 2020 looking to re-establish themselves as a football powerhouse. They are coming into the tournament on the back of winning 7 of their 8 games in the qualifiers.
Despite coming under pressure, Joachim Low has stayed as Germany manager, leading them to two European Championship semi-finals, the Euro 2008 final, 2 World Cup semi-finals and that famous 2014 World Cup campaign. But this will be Low’s last tournament as Germany boss, with the 61-year-old announcing his decision to step down this summer.
Youngsters such as Serge Gnabry, who was their top scorer at the 2020 Euro qualifiers with 8 goals, Timo Werner, who has scored 15 goals in 35 caps for Germany and Kai Havertz, who is calm under pressure, have taken more prominent roles in Germany’s squad. Veterans Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gundogan and captain Manuel Neuer also give this team the depth it needs.
The Germans have won Euros thrice in 1972, 1980, 1996 and have also ended as runners-up those many times. They have reached the knockouts a total of 9 times.
They now find themselves in the toughest group of the competition with Hungary, defending champions Portugal and World champions France in Group F.
