Former BJP leader Babul Supriyo joins TMC after 'quitting' active politics

Former Union Minister Babul Supriyo joined Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress on Saturday, two months after he was asked to resign in a major cabinet reshuffle.

Babul Supriyo was formally inducted into the TMC by the party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien.

Following his induction into the party, Supriyo held a press conference where he clarified that his decision to join TMC is not a “politics of revenge”, but a “politics of opportunity.”

The former BJP MP from Asansol, a month after stepping down as junior minister in the Environment Ministry, had said he would not join any party and would quit politics. However, he later amended his plans and said he would remain a Member of Parliament

Supriyo is the fifth BJP leader to join the TMC after after the party's spectacular victory in the Bengal assembly polls

Meanwhile, following his decision to join TMC, Babul Supriyo is set to quit his Lok Sabha seat and will resign as BJP MP from Asansol.
