The Gurugram administration has announced that meat shops running under the Municipal Corporation will remain closed on Tuesdays. Authorities have also approved proposals to double the licence fee for meat shops from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000, along with increasing the penalty for running such shops illegally by 10 times from what it was earlier – from ₹500 to ₹5,000.

“Hindu sentiments” is what is being considered the reason for the decision made by the local body, reportedly supported by Mayor Madhu Azad. Meat shops owners, meanwhile, fear the decisions will leave them in a lurch at a time when “there is not so much work to begin with”.
