While parents can guide children by talking about substance use, a conversation of this magnitude needs to be tackled with sensitivity. As per the NHS, UK, it is important that parents pick a good time to talk, ensure there isn't a sense of panic, avoid scare tactics and gather ample knowledge before starting the chat.

According to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, UK, you can start a discussion related to drugs when a child is 8 years old. Here are some tips that might come in handy while dealing with children of different age groups.

Tips for children aged 4 to 7 years old

  • Keep telling your child from time to time about the dangers of drugs, smoking, and alcohol, as well as the advantages of eating healthy foods.
  • If you discover that your child has heard about heroin or other hard drugs on TV or the radio, ask them if they are familiar with them. Explain to them the ill effects of hard drugs, smoking, and drinking alcohol.
  • Whenever you consume a medicine at home, make sure your child is aware of it. Explain why the drug is being used and why it should only be taken by people who are unwell.

Tips for children aged 8 to 12 years old

  • Begin by inquiring about their opinions on drugs. Your youngster is more likely to open up with you if you inquire in a casual manner without using any scare tactics.
  • If your child does not feel comfortable to talk then let them know that they can come to you whenever they feel ready to have a conversation.
  • Keep track of all the drug-related news and make sure your child is aware of what has transpired and why.
