West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee signed off from Nandigram by playing the ‘gotra’ card and declared that she is ‘Shandilya’, one of the eight highest Brahmin 'gotras. Campaigning ended on Tuesday ahead of the second phase of assembly elections in the state on April 1.

As Mamata Banerjee downed the curtains on the final campaign in Nandigram, where she is pitted against former aide Suvendu Adhikari, she narrated an incident when a priest asked her about her gotra and she told him she is ‘Shandilya’.

BJP and AIMIM leaders have targeted Mamata for her remark. Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Giriraj Singh retorted that the Chief Minister was announcing her gotra in desperation.
